Dear Yvette,
You carry it in silence. The hurt from your parents. The painful memories from your upbringing. You think speaking about it will make things worse. But what if honesty is actually the bridge to healing?
We move forward in our life, yet sometimes we need to be honest with our parents about situations that hurt us during our upbringing. Speaking about these pain points was a relief. It gave each of them understanding about how I was feeling. That disclosure made us very close.
As parents, we have also made mistakes with our children. We are reminded that we are not perfect, yet Jesus was perfect. Because of this imperfection, we may say and do things that hurt another.
Forgiveness can be very hard. Yet consider Joseph's response after his father Jacob died. His brothers feared he would retaliate. Joseph said to his brothers: "Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today" (Genesis 50:19-20, ESV).
The challenges we faced with our parents and others have shaped who we are today and made us better people. They brought us to where God wants us to be.
What relationship could transform if you chose honesty and forgiveness today?
